Whereas, on January 3rd, the United States launched the systematic bombing of Venezuela, attacking government facilities and killing many, including civilians, and taking Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores captive;
Whereas, U.S. political and military aggression toward Venezuela and the wider region has been escalating—including the deployment of more than 10,000 U.S. military personnel, ongoing naval operations, and actions that have resulted in the killing of over 120 people on boats off the Venezuelan coast—creating conditions many observers describe as a march toward a new war in the Americas;
Whereas, the demonization of Venezuela and other Latin American countries in mainstream U.S. media inflames xenophobic and racist narratives long used to justify intervention in the hemisphere, and such narratives directly impact CWA members, many of whom are immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean;
Whereas, since the 19th century, the Monroe Doctrine has served as a justification for repeated U.S. political, military, and economic interventions across Latin America and the Caribbean, undermining governments, social movements, and trade unions committed to working-class struggles, resulting in repression, military coups, sanctions, and widespread killings of civilians;
Whereas, U.S. government intervention in other countries creates refugee crises and immigration surges to the U.S., subjecting migrants to the violence of ICE, the prison industrial complex, workplace exploitation, and food and housing insecurity;
Whereas, we, as union workers, believe the U.S. government should be focused on meeting the needs of the people, not using our tax dollars to attack and undermine sovereign nations, recognizing that the war machine serves only the billionaire class and its allies in D.C.;
Whereas, Venezuelan workers, students, and communities—like workers everywhere—deserve peace and the right to determine their own political, economic, and social future free from U.S. intervention;
Therefore, be it resolved that our union believes every worker deserves to live in dignity and peace without the fear of being bombed in their homes and workplaces, or intervention into the internal affairs of their nation;
Be it resolved that our union denounces and calls for an immediate end to all U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, and the return of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores to their home country;
Be it resolved that our union will mobilize members to call on their locally and federally elected leaders to reject U.S. imperialism in Venezuela and around the world, and demand an end to the war;
Be it resolved that our union will provide educational resources to membership on the history of U.S. intervention in Latin America and Latin American resistance;
Be it resolved that our union will provide members with information on local events happening in solidarity with Venezuela and encourage their attendance as proud union members.
